Do We Really Need to Read Books in the Age of AI?

Updated: Apr 7

We are now living in the age of artificial intelligence

Thanks to AI, life has become faster and more convenient. It can instantly find answers to our questions and help solve complex problems. Living in this era naturally brings up the question: is there still a need to read books? When I pose a question, AI provides an answer in less than a minute. Yet, I ponder whether it's still worthwhile to spend time reading a book.

What AI Can't Do

As with all advancements, the development of AI comes with both positive and negative aspects. There is a growing concern that as AI becomes more sophisticated, we might become overly dependent on technology. This dependence could gradually erode our ability to think independently. Human thinking and creativity require time; profound thoughts and innovative ideas emerge through this slower, deliberate process. In Australia, for instance, social media is banned for teenagers under the age of 16—a policy I strongly support.

Books reveal the challenges of self-awareness and growth.

Books remain the most valuable historical tools that encourage us to think deeply and grow independently.

Our thoughts should come first, then AI.

We need to learn how to effectively utilise AI. Rather than merely doing what we are told, we should excel at posing questions, seeking the best answers, and optimising their use. AI is an unavoidable part of our reality, but we still hold the power to think. Let's strive to become individuals who can harness this power of thought more effectively and use AI to enhance our capabilities.
